OTHER AUTHORS
Are you a fellow unpublished author with a passion for social justice? DOK wants you!
A big part of what I want to do with DOK is build up a friendly and welcoming writers’ community. I’m especially interested in linking up with other authors like me who write radical, subversive fiction and celebrating their work. As such, I’m looking for volunteers to submit to be featured on my site.
I’m not picky about genre—your work can be about whatever you like, as long as you think the DOK community would like it. Novellas, short stories and poetry are also all fine. However, I’m mainly interested in stories by people with marginalised identities, which focus on characters with marginalised identities, or otherwise have a strong social justice theme. If you happen to be a straight, white, able-bodied, middle-class cisgender man you are welcome to submit (as long as your work fills the last two criteria), but be aware I will give authors of more marginalised identities priority in all respects, including consideration for an author of the month.
If you think you’d be a good fit, just send your work, or a synopsis and a single chapter if it’s a longer work (doesn’t have to be the first chapter, but no more than one chapter please) along with a short bio to [email address].
Depending on how many other submissions I have, I will aim to get back to you in a couple of weeks with my honest thoughts.
I am not a professional editor, or even a published author, but as an enthusiastic amateur and fellow writer I can hopefully provide a fresh perspective and friendly constructive feedback. Remember I’m also working a full-time job and running this website at the same time, so please bear with me if it takes a little longer than expected.
After that, if you’re willing, I would really like to feature you on the Other Authors page. This would involve a short bio of you and synopsis of your work, and a link to wherever your work is currently being displayed. If you haven’t got it up anywhere yet we can put a pdf file up for you.
You obviously keep the rights and carry on displaying your work wherever you like. The only thing I ask is that you return the favour by letting other people know that you’ve been featured on this site. No fuss, no obligation- just extra publicity for us both.
If I really really like what you wrote, you may be featured as my author of the month! This would mean you would be on the front page of DOK FOR A WHOLE MONTH [!] and blasted across all my social media channels. At the moment this does mean you’ll basically be saying hi to my 5 friends and one of their dogs -- but who knows, you share my stuff, I’ll share yours, and I’m sure very soon we’ll both be going places.
